B.A.M. News (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) – B.A.M. Niagara‘s own Paulie “Sweet Pea” O’Sullivan took the championship in the 56 – 60 kg weight division of the 2014 United Golden Gloves boxing tournament held in Mississauga, Ontario May 1st – 3rd.
A tournament put on by Boxing Ontario at the Hershey Centre, O’Sullivan won his first bout on split decision (2-1) on Friday, May 2nd @ 1:00 pm versus Evgeniy Osipov fighting out of Dewith’s Boxing Studio in Mississauga. Osipov is coached by world renowned Dewith Frazer, boxing coach of numerous National, World, Commonwealth & Olympic teams.
The championship bout was on Saturday, May 3rd @ 1:00 pm, and Sweet Pea fought out of the blue corner against Galen Hayes, and won by split decision (2-1). O’Sullivan took control of this bout, and reigned victorious to take the championship for his own.
Hayes fought out of Cabbagetown Boxing Club in Toronto, Ontario, and is under the tutelage of coach Peter Wylie, having coached 9 Olympians and other notable fighters, such as 2012 Canadian heavyweight champion, Neven Pajkic.
Prepared & focused, O’Sullivan is trained by Boxing Coach James Phelps out of B.A.M. Niagara Boxing Club. In his corner for this tournament was assistant coach, Jun Williams.
When asked about the championship bout, coach James Phelps shared:
